Kaikoura Suburban Half Marathon

At the risk of sounding monotonous, I reckon running is something that you do when a tyrannosaurus rex is chasing you and you’ve been caught short finding something with wheels for a quick getaway.
I could be proven wrong though, there appears to be a culture of folk who seem to enjoy trudging the pavement in their running shoes. There was a heap of them showed up at the Kaikoura Suburban School Half Marathon on Saturday. They all took off in groups and raced around the circuits that were allocated to the events they had chosen, they arrived back not too long later, scoffed a bread roll and wandered around in a daze with big grins on their faces.
I’m thinking I might be missing something here, because I think I even noticed the odd person smiling while they were competing in their event. There might be more to this running stuff than putting on running shoes and weird clothes and jogging off down the road.
