Going for a stroll at Kaikoura
Sunday, April 13th, 2008There are plenty of places to stretch your legs, enjoy the scenery and breath the sea air at Kaikoura, whether it’s a 10 minute stroll or something a bit more ambitious.
Very accessible and always worth a look is the peninsula walk from South Bay, get to the end of the road at South Bay and you’re there. A classy information centre and toilets mark the start of the track. This is a favourite late afternoon/evening walk as the peninsula catches the last light of the day.
A short walk past tidal platforms and up the hill along a good track gets you to some nice elevated spots where you can do some serious sight seeing.
South views are all ocean and you can see why the whalers favored this area for tracking their quarry, they launched their boats from Whalers Bay which you will see if you walk far enough.
Views to the North and West are incredible as the last sun licks the mountains and hills, if you have your camera it will probably be dark by the time you get back to the car park, it’s easy to lose track of time.
