A brand new running (or walking) event.

I don’t do running, the thought of plodding countless miles makes my head spin. I’ve tried it a few times and even have a pair of running shoes in my cupboard from the last attempt, it’s just not me. I’d rather sit on a skinny bike seat for hours or walk all day than do running. I have the utmost admiration for anyone who can do running though, I just wish I had the patience and persistence to do it. At Kaikoura last weekend we had a brand spanking new event for people who love to run or walk. Organised and run by the team at Kaikoura Suburban school as a fund raising event it seems to have been a hit with over 160 people competing.

I was going to enter the 10 km walking event (truthfully!) but was called upon to record this great event and what a great time I had. I was amazed at the people who do this running thing. There was Mums and Dads and Kids and Grandmas and Grandads and people I have never seen running before lining up at the start line. They all had that intense daydream like look in their eyes, they were all on a mission to tackle this track of asphalt in front of them and they did. Every one of them. Can you imagine that, some of these people have never walked or run this far before but they challenged themselves to do this. What a feeling it must be to achieve this goal and to start down the road to a new lifestyle, new challenges and that great invincible feeling you get when you complete a project. I’m totally inspired by these people and this event, in fact, I think I’ll get my running shoes out again…..

… and put them on TradeMe so one of these cool people can use them! Well done Suburban School and we look forward to bigger and better next year.

The great 2007 lunar rip off

I’m not a compulsive stargazer, but I am fascinated by things celestial. It comes from the days of being a kid brought up in an isolated rural place and the light of the night was the stars. We used to lie on our backs in the grass for hours and fascinate ourselves with the vastness of the universe. I never did get my head around the magnitude of the skys, hence the ongoing interest. I’ve been keeping an eye on this upcoming event for a few weeks. I knew it was the first event like this since 2000 and we could expect the moon to to be lit by some funky shades of red, yellow and orange as scattered sunlight sneaked past the earth. I was a wee bit excited and I got some gear ready to capture the event. I dug out my 400mm lens which hadn’t been used for a few months, plugged the 1.4 extender on to it and connected it all to my 1DsmkII. Not really an astronomers dream setup I know, but I have made some reasonable moon images with this gear in the past and after all, the images aren’t for NASA.

The introduction - looking good!

Well, the weather gods weren’t having it! There would be no free show  for the folks of Kaikoura tonight, no matter how many times you sneak outside thinking you’ll catch a glimpse and no matter how cold you get in the brisk night air staring into nothing, there will be no seeing the moon tonight. I was a little disappointed I guess, but we live on the fringes of nature here and every image made is a bonus. I’ll wake in the morning and look out my window to a beautiful wild amazing day and anyway I can make some decent photos of this eclipse thing in 2011. At least I got a wee peek.

Almost a new Blog spot

After a few hours of do it yourself no. 8 kiwi mentality, learn as you go, pull your hair out a bit sometimes, I just about have a functioning blog here at my web site. I haven’t quite figured the navigation bar which I would like to carry through from the rest of the site, but give me time and I’ll work it out. The previous blog arrangement was not practical and as you will have noticed was not happening because it was a bit of a mission to maintain.
This WordPress setup seems user friendly so I’ll see how we go here. We’ll call this a test blog and from here it’s onward and upward…..
